Hashtags

A hashtag — written with a # symbol — indexes a keyword or a topic.

Categorising posts by keyword

• Put # before a relevant word or phrase in a post to categorise it and make it easier to find.
• Each hashtag becomes a link to a page of other posts carrying the same one.
• A hashtag can go anywhere in a post.
• You can add up to 30 hashtags to a post or a comment.

How do I use a hashtag?

• Add it to a caption. If the post is public, the hashtag makes it discoverable.
• Follow hashtags to keep up with topics you care about.

How do I follow a hashtag?

Tap any hashtag you see, then choose Follow. Its posts start appearing in your home timeline. Tap the hashtag and choose Unfollow to stop.

There is a limit on how fast you can follow hashtags: 20 an hour and 100 a day.

Tips

• Spaces and punctuation end a hashtag, so #two words is only #two.
• Any public post carrying a hashtag may appear in search results and on discover pages.
• A hashtag on a followers-only post does not make that post public. It is indexed only for the people who could already see it.
• You can search for a hashtag by typing it into the search bar.
