Blocking accounts

There are three ways to stop seeing somebody, and they do different things.

Blocking

A block is the strongest of the three. When you block an account:

• They stop following you and you stop following them. Neither follow comes back if you unblock.
• They cannot follow you again, mention you, reply to you, or send you a message.
• Their posts and comments disappear from your timelines, and yours from theirs.
• Nobody is told. There is no notification for being blocked.

Block someone from the menu on their profile or on any of their posts. Your list is at blocked accounts, and unblocking is one click there.

Muting

A mute is quieter. The account stays following you and you stay following them; you simply stop seeing their posts. They are not told, and nothing they can see changes. Use it for someone you do not want to cut off, only to stop reading. Your list is at muted accounts.

Blocking a whole domain

If the problem is a whole server rather than one person, block the domain instead. Every account on it is hidden from you at once, including accounts created there later. That list is at domain blocks.

This is your own block and affects only what you see. It is different from a server-wide block, which the operators of nicagram apply for everybody and publish at banned instances.

What a block cannot do

Inside nicagram a block is enforced by this server and is reliable. When the other account is on a different server, this server tells that server about the block and hides them from you here; whether their software also hides you from them is that server's decision. Nothing on the fediverse — or on the web — can stop somebody from logging out and looking at a public post. If that matters, restrict who your posts go to.

Blocking is not reporting

Blocking protects you and tells nobody. If somebody is breaking the rules, report them as well — that is what reaches a moderator.
