Your profile
Editing
How do I edit my bio, name, e-mail address or password?
- Open account settings.
- Your display name, website and bio are there. Change them and press Submit.
- Your e-mail address is under e-mail settings, and your password under password.
Why can I not change my username?
This is federated software: other servers identify you by your handle and not all of them can follow a rename, so renaming is not allowed. Create a new account with the username you want, and use account migration to bring your followers over.
Privacy
How do I make my posts visible only to approved followers?
- Open privacy settings.
- Tick Private account.
- You are asked whether to keep the followers you already have and whether to stop accepting new requests.
- Press Submit.
Pending requests are approved or refused at follow requests. Post-by-post visibility is a separate control; see controlling visibility.
Security
How do I keep my account secure?
- Choose a strong password and do not reuse it on other websites.
- Never share your password. Nobody who runs this server will ask for it.
- Sign out on shared or public computers.
- Check your account log from time to time for sign-ins you do not recognise.
- Turn on two-factor authentication.
How do I add extra protection?
Two-factor authentication. Once it is on, a password on its own is not enough to sign in. Set it up from security settings, and keep the recovery codes somewhere that is not your phone.
How do I report unauthorised use of my account?
Change your password first, then sign out every other session from security settings. Then tell the operators of this server from the contact page.
Migration
How do I migrate my account?
Your other account must be on a server that supports the account migration extension — Pixelfed, Mastodon and most compatible software do.
Start at account aliases. The full procedure is on the account migration page.
How long does it take?
Followers are moved server by server, so it is not instant. Where posts are migrated too, that can take a few hours; ask the admins if it has been more than a day.
Why were my posts not migrated?
Migrating posts is optional and not every server does it. Followers move in any case; posts move only when both servers support it and the operators have enabled it.
Disabling or deleting your account
How do I temporarily disable my account?
While it is disabled your profile, photos, comments and likes are hidden. Signing in again brings them all back.
- Sign in to https://nicagram.com.
- Open security settings and confirm your password.
- In the danger zone, choose Disable.
- Follow the instructions on the next page.
How do I delete my account?
Deleting is permanent. Your profile, photos, videos, comments, likes and followers are removed, and this server asks the servers that hold copies to remove theirs. You cannot sign up again with the same username here, and a deleted account cannot be reactivated. If you only want a break, disable it instead.
Some servers set a grace period: the account is locked immediately and deleted for good after a number of days, during which signing in cancels it. The deletion page tells you which applies here before you confirm.
- Open security settings and confirm your password.
- In the danger zone, choose Delete.
- Follow the instructions on the next page.
Export anything you want to keep from data export first. It is not available afterwards.
