Account migration

Account migration moves your followers from one server to another. It is useful if you want to switch servers because of the community, the policies or the features somewhere else — without asking everybody who follows you to find you again.

Not every server has migration turned on. If the aliases page linked below is not available on nicagram, it is off here and the operators can tell you why.

Moving to this server

1. On your old server, make a note of your full handle there.
2. Here, open Account aliases and add your old account as an alias. This is what proves the two accounts are the same person.
3. On your old server, start the move and point it at your account here.
4. Your followers are asked to follow the new account. This happens server by server, so it is not instant.

Moving away from this server

1. Create the account on the new server first, and add this account as an alias there.
2. Come back here and open Account migration.
3. Enter the new handle and confirm.

What moves and what does not

• Followers move. That is the point of the feature.
• Who you follow, your blocks and your mutes can usually be exported from one server and imported into the other rather than moving on their own.
• Posts do not move by default. Some servers support importing them and some do not; where they do, it can take a few hours.
• Your old account stays where it is, marked as moved, and stops accepting new followers.

If a migration has not finished after a day, ask the operators of either server — a stuck move is usually one server refusing a delivery, which only they can see.
