Fediverse

Fediverse is a portmanteau of “federation” and “universe”. It is a common, informal name for a federation of social network servers, specializing in different types of media.

nicagram is one of those servers. An account here can be followed from any server that speaks the same protocol, and you can follow accounts on them, without anybody having to sign up twice.

Supported fediverse projects

Some of the better known fediverse projects include:

• Mastodon — a federated microblogging alternative.
• Pixelfed — federated photo sharing, and the software this server is compatible with.
• PeerTube — federated video hosting.
• Lemmy — federated link aggregation and discussion.

They all speak ActivityPub, which is why a post made here can be replied to from a server running entirely different software.
